Seminar: Optimizing Sales Territories via Multi-dimensional Modeling and Analytics

Abstract
This lecture shows how business and computer science can be leveraged to provide enterprise informatics solutions. It starts with a summary of the business problem, the management of Sales Territories, and the issues with existing solutions. It follows with a reminder of Multidimensional Data Modeling and Analytics, and how its application to Territory Management solves the issues and provides additional benefits. We then cover the thinking process that leads to the solution as well as new issues that arise from the new approach. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary leverage in Informatics.

Bio
George Colliat has over 40 years of experience in Enterprise Software. He is currently senior vice president at Oracle focusing on CRM products. He joined Oracle in January 2006 through its acquisition of Siebel, where he previously managed the development of CRM and Analytics products.

Prior to joining Siebel in 2001, Colliat served as senior vice president of Engineering at Webvan, an internet company providing home delivery within a 30-minute window of merchandise ordered via internet. He also served as senior vice president of Engineering of a start-up, Arbor Software, where he lead the creation of the OLAP market space via the introduction of the multidimensional analysis product, Essbbase. Arbor Software went public in 1995 and ultimately merged with Hyperion, which was acquired by Oracle in March 2007.

Colliat began his career under the mentorship of Charles Bachman, a database modeling pioneer, and built database systems, mainframe operating systems, networking systems, and On Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) products in the 1970s and 1980s. His portfolio includes positions in Engineering and Product Management at Honeywell, ITT, and Alcatel, spanning most areas of enterprise technology.

Colliat holds an engineering degree from the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Lyon, France. As a Fulbright scholar he earned a Master’s of Science in electrical engineering from Stanford University, followed by a marketing executive degree.

Colliat serves on the Advisory Council of the School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering and also serves on the Executive Advisory Board with the Department of Information Systems at Arizona State University.
