Computer systems engineering (BSE)

Make an impact on the hardware and software systems embedded in the world around us.

Students working towards the bachelor of science in engineering (BSE) degree in computer systems engineering at CIDSE will learn the basis of logic design, microprocessor system design, computer architecture and computer interfacing, while continually focusing on system requirements and design. They also focus on computer networks for the transmission of data and multimedia. They work on the interface between different pieces of hardware and strive to provide new capabilities for existing and new systems or products. The computer systems engineering program also offers students the chance to concentrate their students in cybersecurity. The concentration allows students to take core classes within a subject area that will meet the computer systems engineering and/or technical elective requirements within one’s degree.

Why computer systems engineering?

Computer engineers often find themselves focusing on engineering problems or challenges that result in new state-of-the-art products that integrate computing and communication capabilities. They work on the development verification and testing of computer hardware and software, from chips to device controllers and embedded systems. Computer engineers frequently find jobs that involve designing new applications of computers and other devices, such as those used in:

  • Airplanes
  • Digital television and photography
  • Intelligent highways and control systems for cars
  • New apparatuses for the sight-impaired or others with physical disabilities
  • New cell phone technologies
  • Security and defense systems

Computer systems engineers are employed in industry, government, education and consulting and are concerned with the design, development and operation of hardware and software components of a computer system.

Computer engineers frequently find jobs that involve designing new applications of computers and other devices, such as those used in airplanes, digital media, cell phone technologies, security systems, intelligent highways and control systems for cars, and devices for people with physical disabilities.
